What is polyurethane?

Polyurethane is a highly versatile polymer material, used in applications as diverse as insulation, furniture and industrial equipment. It offers a unique combination of flexibility, durability and strength, suitable for a wide range of needs.

Types of polyurethane

  • Soft polyurethane (flexible foam): Essential for applications where comfort and flexibility are paramount, such as mattresses, cushions and car seats.
  • Rigid polyurethane (rigid foam): Essential for thermal insulation and construction, used in buildings and household appliances for its insulating properties.
  • Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) : A key material because of its flexibility and strength, particularly in footwear, phone covers, and protective coatings.
  • Elastomeric polyurethane: Essential for demanding industrial environments, used in wheels, conveyor belts, automotive parts and shoe soles because of its durability and resistance to wear.

Machining polyurethane: at Artois Plastiques

Polyurethane, a versatile and resistant material, is increasingly used in many industrial sectors. Its mechanical and thermal properties make it an ideal choice for the manufacture of technical parts. Machining polyurethane requires specific know-how and equipment.

Chemical composition

Polyurethane is an extremely versatile synthetic polymer obtained by the chemical reaction between a polyol and an isocyanate. This reaction creates urethane bonds, hence its name. The nature of the reagents used enables a wide variety of properties to be obtained, from rigid materials to flexible elastomers.

Polyurethane machining techniques at Artois Plastiques

Several machining techniques can be used to process polyurethane:

  • Cutting: To obtain simple shapes, 2D contours or bores, laser or water-jet cutting is often preferred.
  • Mechanical machining: precision parts can be made from this material using very specific tools.
  • Numerically-controlled (CNC) machining: This technique offers great flexibility and optimum precision for the manufacture of complex and awkwardly-shaped parts.
