Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate (PC) is a thermoplastic polymer known for its exceptional combination of mechanical, thermal and optical properties. It is widely used in applications requiring high impact resistance and transparency.
Main features
- Transparency: High optical transparency with light transmission of around 88-90%, slightly lower than PMMA but with better impact resistance.
- Impact resistance: Exceptional impact resistance, approximately 200 times more resistant than glass.
- Thermal resistance: Maximum operating temperature approx. 120°C to 140°C.
- Dimensional stability: Very good dimensional stability and low coefficient of thermal expansion.
- UV resistance: Good resistance to UV rays with specific additives.
- Lightweight: About half the weight of glass, similar to PMMA.
- Easy to manufacture: Can be moulded, extruded, thermoformed and machined.
- Electrical properties: Excellent electrical insulation properties.
- Chemical resistance: Good resistance to dilute acids, alcohols and hydrocarbons, but can be attacked by certain organic solvents.
Applications
Polycarbonate is used in a wide range of industries because of its unique combination of strength, transparency and lightness.
- Construction industry: Security glazing, roof panels, riot-proof windows and partitions.
- Automotive industry: Headlights, motorbike windscreens, side windows and interior components.
- Electronics and electrical engineering: device housings, connectors and insulating components.
- Medical equipment: Medical devices, safety lenses and protective equipment.
- Optics: Spectacle lenses, safety lenses and precision optical components.
- Safety and protection: Riot shields, hard hats and safety screens.
- Consumer goods: CDs, DVDs, reusable containers and shock-resistant kitchen utensils.
Polycarbonate is renowned for its durability, versatility and exceptional performance in extreme conditions, making it the preferred choice for a wide range of technical and consumer applications.
